Define collects nothing about you. When you look up a word, the only thing sent over the network is that word, to a public dictionary service. Your history stays on your device. There are no analytics and no accounts.

What happens when you look up a word

Your lookup is sent as a single request to the community-run Free Dictionary API (api.dictionaryapi.dev, serving Wiktionary data). The request contains the looked-up word and nothing else — never the page you are on, never your identity, never your browsing history. That service's own handling of requests is governed by its operators; we add no identifiers to the request. If you play a pronunciation, the audio file is fetched from the URL the dictionary service returns.

Data collection

Personal data collected by us: none. We run no servers.
Analytics or telemetry: none.
Browsing data: none. Without double-click mode, the extension can only touch a page at the moment you invoke Define on it.

What is stored, and where

Lookup history — your last 50 words with a one-line definition — is stored in Chrome's local extension storage on your device only. Clear it at any time with the popup's Clear button; it is deleted when you uninstall.
Preferences (for example whether double-click mode is on) are stored the same way.

Nothing is synced, uploaded, or shared.

Double-click mode and site access

Double-click mode is off by default. If you enable it, Chrome asks you to grant access to sites; that access is used exclusively to detect your double-clicks and show the definition bubble. Disable the toggle, or revoke access in chrome://extensions, at any time — the extension keeps working via the right-click menu and the toolbar popup.

Third parties

The Free Dictionary API (dictionaryapi.dev) receives the looked-up word, as described above. No other third party receives anything.

Payments (future)

A one-time Pro upgrade may be offered later, processed by ExtensionPay/Stripe on their own pages. If that is introduced, this policy will be updated first; the free features and the guarantees above will not change.
